Barking and Dagenham Council's human resources team secured the 'Transforming the Working Environment' award at the Public Services People Managers Association (PPMA)'s Excellence in People Management Awards.

Receiving the prize at a gala event in Newcastle on 19 April, Barking and Dagenham beat competition from Leeds City Council and Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospital NHS Trust.

The PPMA recognises public organisations from local and central government, emergency services and health organisations which continue to operate efficiently, despite cuts in government funding.

Gail Clark, head of Workforce Change, said: "The award recognises, celebrates and shares the fantastic work going on every day by our workforce in Barking and Dagenham.

"Working in and for a public service is increasingly challenging and profoundly rewarding; the work of human resources and organisational development colleagues help to support the council to transform the way that we deliver our services to our community."

Marking a strong start to 2018, in March the authority also won both Council of the Year and Driving Growth awards at the Local Government Chronicle awards in London.
